What is a North Carolina surety bond?

If you are required to post a surety bond in North Carolina, it’s essential to learn more about surety bonds in general. The easiest way to describe them is as a contractual agreement between three sides:

  • A principal
  • An obligee
  • A surety

The principal is the side that needs to post the bond and the obligee is the one requiring it. The role of the surety is to underwrite the bond and effectively vouch for the actions of the obligee. Surety bonds are most frequently required when a business needs to obtain a license or a permit.

Lance Surety Bonds offers all types of North Carolina surety bonds, even for applicants with bad credit. All of our bonds are issued by A-rated and T-listed bonding companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to post a surety bond in North Carolina?

There are three main categories of surety bonds, based on who needs to obtain them:

  • License bonds - the biggest category of bonds, required from businesses to ensure that they act in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Contract bonds - most frequently required for work on public construction projects to ensure the proper completion of a project
  • Court bonds - these types of bonds are required from fiduciaries, guardians or individuals wishing to appeal a court decision in front of a higher instance

How much does getting a surety bond cost?

Each surety bond has a different total bond amount, which refers to the maximum coverage it can offer to successful claimants. Therefore, to calculate your bonding cost, you need to start with this amount. For example, a North Carolina auto dealer bond is $50,000.

However, a dealer wishing to obtain that bond and get a license, will not be required to post the full amount. Instead, they pay yearly premiums, which are a small percentage of the total amount, especially if they have a good credit score. Surety underwriters consider credit score essential when examining a particular application. Applicants with a good FICO score will rarely pay premiums above 4%.

Go to our What Does a Surety Bond Cost? page for more information about calculating and reducing your premiums.

What about bad credit surety bonds?

It’s a bit more difficult to obtain your North Dakota surety bond if you have bad credit. Some underwriters are unwilling to assume the higher risk involved. However, with Lance Surety Bonds, 99% of applicants are guaranteed to get the bond they need, thanks to our bad credit surety bonds program.

Premiums for bad credit applicants are in the range of 5% to 15%, and collateral is rarely required.
