Contractor licenses are processed by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Contractors License Board. Hawaii’s contractor licensing and bond requirements are legally established by Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 444.
All contractors doing business in Hawaii must be licensed. The minimum bond amount for all contractors is $5,000. The department reviews each bond applicant and determines its bond amount, which can exceed $5,000. After a year, qualifying contractors can request a bond waiver.
The obligee for a Hawaii contractor license bond is the State of Hawaii. The bond is continuously active. However, it can be canceled by the surety company. The surety company is required to provide the obligee with a 30-day written notice prior to the cancellation.
To avoid bond cancellation, you must pay the premium yearly. We will help you maintain the bond by providing you with renewal instructions each year. If a license is forfeited due to a canceled bond and the bond is not replaced within 60 days, the contractor must re-apply as a new license applicant.
