Vehicle Verifier Bonds Explained
California’s DMV requires that people who do vehicle verification must be registered in the state. The vehicle verifier bond is one of the requirements that verifiers need to fulfill prior to being granted a permit. The bond protects the state of California, as well as vehicle owners, against potential unlawful actions on part of vehicle verifiers.
Like other surety bonds, vehicle verifier bonds represent an agreement between you (the vehicle verifier), the DMV, and a bonding company. The bonding company backs the bond, and guarantees that the verifier will abide by the provisions of the bond agreement. In case that doesn’t happen, the surety and the vehicle verifier are jointly liable to provide compensation for any losses incurred by the state or third parties.

Questions about Vehicle Verifier Bond
Who needs to get bonded as a vehicle verifier in California?
California defines as vehicle verifier as “a person not expressly excluded by California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 675.6 who inspects, records, documents, and submits to the department, or its authorized representative, such proof of vehicle identification as may be required by the department for the purpose of registering or transferring the ownership of vehicles.”
Exempted parties include authorized DMV employees, peace officers and special agents of the National Theft Auto Bureau.
What’s the cost of vehicle verifier bonds?
As far as surety bonds go, vehicle verifier bonds are pretty inexpensive. The total amount is set at just $5,000. This amount is the maximum compensation a claimant can receive from the vehicle verifier if they transgress the law.
The cost of a vehicle verifier bond is much less than that. We can underwrite these bonds for as little as $100 per year. Unlike other types of bonds, these bonds can be underwritten without a credit report check.

- Sections 675.5, 675.6, and 11300-11310 of the California Vehicle Code
- Title 13, Chapter 1 of the California Code of Regulations
