NC Landscape Contractor Bonds Explained
Every contractor who wants to perform landscape work in North Carolina is required by the Landscape Contractors’ Licensing Board to obtain a contractor license bond.
The purpose of this bond is to ensure that contractors abide by applicable state rules and regulations, more specifically those of Chapter 89D of the North Carolina General Statutes. Keep in mind that this can include amendments adopted up to one year after work on a project has finished.
If a contractor is found to be in violation of the Statutes or causes any damage or loss to their clients, they can face a bond claim– unless they take steps to fix the violation within 30 days.

Questions about Contractor License Bonds
What’s the cost of a landscape contractor bond in North Carolina?
The North Carolina Landscape Contractors’ Licensing Board requires a $10,000 bond, which means that a claim can be made on the bond for no more than that amount.
The cost of getting bonded, however, is an annual premium which is calculated based on your personal credit score and that of other owners (if multiple). The table below contains a breakdown of expected premiums for most credit score ranges.
|Bond Type||Surety Bond Amount||Above 700||Between 650-699||Between 600-649||Below 599|
|NC Landscape Contractor Bond||$10,000||$100-$150||$100-$300||$300-$500||$500-$1,000|
These amounts are only for reference purposes. Other factors besides your personal credit score can also be considered during the underwriting process. You can learn more on our What Does a Surety Bond Cost? Page.

How do I handle claims?
As we mentioned, you need to be well-acquainted with the provisions of Chapter 89D of the North Carolina General Statutes. As the bond form states, you will be notified by the Licensing Board if there is a claim against you. If you fail to take measures to remedy the situation within 30 days, the affected party has the right to file a formal claim and seek compensation on the bond.
If you don’t pay that compensation promptly, the surety is legally obliged to step in and provide the compensation for you. However, that means that later on, the surety will take you to court for reimbursement. This is the least ideal outcome for your business: it will not only be costly, but is likely to prevent you from obtaining a bond in the future.
How do I get a NC landscape contractor license?
To apply and get licensed as a landscape contractor in North Carolina, you will need to satisfy a number of other requirements:
- Pass a contractor’s license exam
- Satisfy the Board’s requirements of good moral standing
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Pay applicable fees
Before you start preparing your application, make sure to contract the Landscape Contractors’ Licensing Board for the most up-to-date information, as licensing requirements are frequently subject to change.
