The North Carolina Landscape Contractors’ Licensing Board requires a $10,000 bond, which means that a claim can be made on the bond for no more than that amount.

The cost of getting bonded, however, is an annual premium which is calculated based on your personal credit score and that of other owners (if multiple). The table below contains a breakdown of expected premiums for most credit score ranges.

As we mentioned, you need to be well-acquainted with the provisions of Chapter 89D of the North Carolina General Statutes. As the bond form states, you will be notified by the Licensing Board if there is a claim against you. If you fail to take measures to remedy the situation within 30 days, the affected party has the right to file a formal claim and seek compensation on the bond.

If you don’t pay that compensation promptly, the surety is legally obliged to step in and provide the compensation for you. However, that means that later on, the surety will take you to court for reimbursement. This is the least ideal outcome for your business: it will not only be costly, but is likely to prevent you from obtaining a bond in the future.

To apply and get licensed as a landscape contractor in North Carolina, you will need to satisfy a number of other requirements:

• Pass a contractor’s license exam
• Satisfy the Board’s requirements of good moral standing
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Pay applicable fees
