The Full Utah Contractor License Bond Guide

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) sets the bonding requirements for all types of contractors in the state. Applicants for any type of contractor license will need a contractor license bond to meet the state requirements.

The purpose of the bonding is to ensure you will follow the Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act (Title 58, Chapter 55 of the Annotated Code). It safeguards the interests of your clients and the state.

Questions about Contractor License Bonds in Utah

When Do You Need a Utah Contractor License Bond?

Both general and specialty contractors in Utah may need a contractor license bond to obtain a license from the DOPL.

The conditions for the bond requirement are the following:

  • Delinquency in payments of debts or other obligations, including income taxes, workers’ compensation insurance, liability insurance, payroll withholdings, unemployment, Residence Lien Recovery Fund, credit cards, banks, alimony, and child support from the last 2 years;
  • Bankruptcy in the last 7 years or enacted judgments in the last 5 years;
  • Your liabilities are more than the total value of your properties.

If you have to get bonded because you are facing one of the issues listed above, the bond amounts are:

  • $50,000 for General Building (B100) & General Engineering Contractors (E100) licenses
  • $25,000 for Residential & Small Commercial Contractors (R100) licenses
  • $15,000 for the rest of the license classifications

The bond amount you have to post is set by the Department and varies depending on your license type. To get bonded, you’ll need to pay a small fraction of it, referred to as the bond premium.

Your personal credit score is the factor that has the strongest influence on the bond cost. Your overall financial profile, including company finances, fixed and liquid assets, and professional experience, may also come into play.

For an estimate of your bond cost per license type, you can check the following table.

Your Utah Contractor License Bond Cost per License Type

General Building Contractors and General Engineering Contractors $50,000 $500
Residential Contractors and Small Commercial Contractors $25,000 $250
The rest of license classifications $15,000 $150

What Are the Utah Contractors License Requirements?

The criteria you’ll need to satisfy for your Utah contractor license depend on the exact type you’re applying for.

Some of the common requirements for all license classifications include:

  • Filling out the contractor license application form provided by the DOPL
  • Registering a business entity and including information about it
  • Providing financial information
  • Showcasing proof of professional experience
  • Passing the required trade or law examinations
  • Obtaining a general liability insurance certificate ($100,000 per incident and $300,000 total)

  • Paying the required license fees

You can review the full list of requirements in our Utah Contractor License Guide.

How do I renew my contractors license bond?

You need to renew your bond on an annual basis, which involves not much more than getting a new quote and paying it. We keep a database with renewal deadlines for all our clients, so we’ll make sure you meet your deadline, by sending your several notifications when your expiration date approaches.

If you have exceptionally strong finances, you may submit a request for a release of the bonding requirement. The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing will want to look at your tax returns, credit report, and financial statements before they make a decision whether to waive the requirement.
