How Much Does a Louisiana Contractor License Bond Cost?

A Louisiana contractor license bond ranges from $100 to $5,000. For contractors who must meet the state requirement, the bond amount is $10,000 or more. In addition, various municipalities have additional surety bond requirements for contractors.

To meet the requirements for a Louisiana contractor bond, you do not need to pay the full amount of the bond. Your bond can be purchased from an authorized surety company in Louisiana at a premium rate of 1% to 10%.

We provide bonds to more than 99% of our customers. The premium rate for your new bond is dependent on your financial assets, professional experience in the trade and credit scores.

Contractors with a credit score of 700 or better qualify for a 1% to 3% bond premium rate. With a score that falls between 600 and 600, the rate will be 3% to 5%. Contractors with a lower credit score will receive a rate of 5% to 10%.

Contractors License Bond Requirements in Louisiana

Under Louisiana law, contractors must have a net worth of at least $10,000 to obtain a state license. If they do not meet this net worth requirement, they must obtain a surety bond to compensate for the deficit. If the applicant has a negative net worth, the required bond may be over $10,000.

The following activities require a state-level license in Louisiana:

  • Building construction
  • Highway, street and bridge construction
  • Heavy construction
  • Municipal and public works construction
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Plumbing
  • Hazardous materials
  • Residential construction

The required bond must remain active to maintain the state-required license. The obligee is the Louisiana Department of Revenue. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors is responsible for licensing.

In addition, local municipalities may have additional contractor bond requirements. These include:
