How Much Does a Colorado Contractor License Bond Cost?

Colorado doesn’t have a statewide contractor license bond requirement, but cities or counties within the state might have their own bonding requirements, meaning the cost of getting bonded depends on where you work. For example, in Denver, general contractors need a $50,000 bond. However, in the city of Arvada, the bond amount is only $20,000.

That doesn’t mean you have to pay that much money, though. Typically, bond premiums cost around 1% to 3% of the bond, depending on factors like your credit score and business assets. The better these look to the surety company, the more money you can save on your bond premium, so for a $50,000 bond you might only have to pay $500.

Here is a table illustrating how the cost of a Contractor license bond can vary, using Denver and Arvada as examples.

How to Get a Contractor License Bond in Colorado

1. Determine the Bond You Need

When seeking a contractor license bond in Colorado, the first crucial step is to determine the specific type of surety bond required for your particular license. Since Colorado doesn’t have a statewide requirement for contractors, different counties and municipalities may have varying bond requirements.

If you're new to this process, you may have questions about this stage. Feel free to contact us if you need clarification.

2. Apply for Your Bond

Start by filling out our online application form to begin the bonding process. We'll walk you through each step to make sure everything goes smoothly and without any hassle.

We recently assisted a contractor in the city of Denver, Colorado, with obtaining their contractor license bond. Despite his extensive experience in the industry, he found the bonding process daunting and was concerned about its impact on their business. Understanding his commitment to high-quality work, we guided him through each step of the bond application process, ensuring he met the city of Denver's specific licensing requirements. This support enabled him to launch his business seamlessly and build a reputation as a reliable contractor.

3. Get a Quote

Typically, bond quotes are quick to process, especially if you have a good credit score, or if we’ve provided bonds for you already. However, in some instances, it may take 24 to 48 hours to receive a quote. No matter the situation, our goal is to provide you with the best rate possible.

4. Pay Your Bond Premium

Paying the premium is the final step to getting your bond. From there, you can submit proof to whichever city or county needs it. Often, these bonds are valid for one year, but some cities or counties may set different timeframes.

Contractor License Bond Requirements in Colorado

As a contractor, you may get hired to perform different jobs within the same city or county. Sometimes, a single bond is sufficient for multiple types of work. However, in other cases, you might have to get multiple bonds for the same city.

For example, Denver requires separate bonds for cement sidewalk work, paving, structural contractor work, and sewer work. Even if you’re licensed and bonded as a general contractor in Denver, you may have to get additional bonds to do specific or specialty jobs. So, it’s imperative to consult the city before starting any work to avoid any fines or legal troubles.

Here’s a comprehensive list of the all the different contractor license bond requirements in Ohio.
